What's on Sale this Month?
By: sar1

If you haven’t already shopped yourself out this month with all of your holiday preparations, then it’s time to get prepared for the post-holiday clearance! December 26th is notorious for long Customer Service lines as people try to return gifts. Save yourself the hassle that day and focus on just the holiday clearance shelves if you do plan to go out. Check your receipts for return policies, or simply call the store to find out. Waiting just a few days can save you a lot of time. Many stores have extended return deadlines and having that gift receipt in hand will make the process easier. This is a great time to make your list of what you can re-stock for next year. Stocking stuffers, party essentials like holiday plates and disposable flatware, decorations, wrapping paper and cards. It’s a good opportunity to pick up those teacher gifts for next year. Keep an eye out for clearance on red and green items that can be re-purposed for Valentine’s Day and Saint Patrick’s crafts. There’s still time to save on those last-minute holiday dinner and baking essentials like gravy, pie crusts, butter, flour, and cookie decorations. Frozen appetizers should also hit the sale ads for New Year’s celebrations soon. Even if you’re not going out for New Year’s, a small buffet of appetizers for your own family is a fun way to celebrate at home. Check out the Cooks Corner for some great holiday baking and appetizer recipes and share a few of your own!

Tips for Members
By: CARRIEMB2
Shopping Lists are documents that match coupons from our extensive coupon database to store sale items (most likely coming from store's the weekly ad). They are an extremely important part of AFC. Without them, we would have to figure out all those coupon match-ups on our own! Volunteers who complete Shopping Lists on AFC are called Shopping List Assistants. These members work to pull out the best deals from each ad to add to the Shopping List, spending an average of an hour on each list. For their time and effort, they are awarded a complimentary Supporting Membership for the length of their service, a private forum to talk to other SLAs and the team, and a flashy SLA bling tag!

Those perks are nice, but why do SLAs really do it and what do they think about being SLAs? Here's some answers from current SLAs: It is a "a perfect way to contribute to AFC, help other members, and organize my own weekly shopping while in the process," said Stacey012345, the A&P/SuperFresh/Waldbaums Deals SLA. olivas.sandra, an SLA who does 6 lists, stated, "The reason I became an SLA is I wanted to give back to AFC. It has given me so much." Those sentiments are shared by rebekahdawn who similarly said, "I wanted to make a contribution back to the site that has revolutionized my way of thinking about saving/spending/shopping/couponing." twinmommma thinks, "It's a lot of fun to enter the sales, do the match-ups, and then realize 'Wow, I just found 6 things for free this week.'"

Anyone can become an SLA if they meet a few guidelines. SLAs must be members in good standing for at least 2 months with a minimum post count of 100, cannot be team members at other sites which are deemed competitors of AFC, and must must always represent AFC in a positive manner. If you are interested in finding out more about becoming an SLA for a store that needs one, please post in Contact Us. We'd love to have you you join the team! mamagibson the SLA for Dollar General says, "The satisfaction you get from the Thanks is well worth it!!"

Member Spotlight
Congratulations to bellsandbabies, the winner of our Awesome AFC'er Award for December! Here's what she has to say about AFC:

1. Tell us a little about yourself! How long have you been a member of AFC?
I have been a member of AFC for about 4 years. I started couponing after my son was born, when we decided I would be a Stay At Home Mom! Of course, we had to find ways to save money and cut our spending down. Thankfully AFC has been an enormous help to us!

2. What is you favorite feature of AFC?
I love being able to discuss the deals on AFC in the forums. I check several times a day to see if there are any deals that I may have missed. I also use the coupon database daily. I love being able to match the sales up with the coupons that are available!

3. How has AFC changed your shopping habits?
AFC has completely changed my shopping habits. I have gone from spending $150 - $200 a week on groceries, personal care items, and over the counter medicines and got it down to $30 - $50 a week! And I was able to cut out SAM's Club completely, which I would spend $200 - $300 a month at! That means that I am saving almost $1,000 a month since I joined AFC!

4. What is you favorite store to shop? What stores are the most coupon friendly? What stores have the best sales/prices?
My favorite store to shop is Harris Teeter! We have a wonderful store with excellent management. They have Super Double Coupon events that allow me to stock up on a lot of items for FREE!

5. What is your favorite thing to stockpile and why?
I stockpile anything that I can get for FREE! I would say that my favorite is toys and gifts. I start shopping for Christmas next year as soon as the clearance starts for this year! I have a gift closet that is full by February! I will only stock up on toys and gifts if they are 75% off or more. I love being able to go to the closet and pull out a gift anytime throughout the year! That also means that by Christmas we have most of the toys that we need and we can splurge on a nice gift for the kids!

6. How do you get coupons and how do you keep them organized?
I order my coupons through an insert service. I get 10-20 of each insert a week. I am one of those crazy coupon ladies that has a huge binder! I love my Case-it 4" D-Ring binder! I have it filled with baseball card sheets with my coupons in order from A-Z! I always carry my binder with me too, just in case I come accross an excellent clearance deal!

7. What advice do you have for a new couponer?
The best advice I can give is to be sure to plan ahead and be organized. Nothing is more frustrating then to go shopping without a list, or forgetting coupons and getting to the register and the total is higher than expected. Make your shopping list before you leave. Make sure you have the coupons you plan on using and know exactly how much you are going to pay. And make sure you have everything ready before getting to the checkout so you can watch the register closely. That way if something rings up wrong or a coupon didnt scan, it can be fixed right away.

8. What advice do you have someone new to AFC?
Don't be afraid to ask questions. We are all here to help each other. If you don't understand something or need help, just ask! This is a wonderful online community with lots of coupon experts and coupon beginners. We all want to make saving money an easy and painless experience!
