Member Spotlight Congratulations to Weatie, the winner of our Awesome AFC'er award for July. Here's what she had to say about AFC: 1. Tell us a little about yourself. How long have you been a member of AFC? I joined AFC in June of 2010. I lurked for a while before joining in the fun. I am 100% Jersey Girl. Born & Raised at the NJ Shore. For fun, I love riding my Harley. I'm a single mom, and my kids are now all grown up. I have a small private horse farm which is my peace of mind as well as my back breaker. 2. What is you favorite feature of AFC? I love the friendly helpfulness of AFC members. AFC is divided into catagories and sections which make it easy to visit and read the store sales and deals. So, when you're in the Shoprite section, you know every post is regarding Shoprite. It makes for easy navigation and time efficiency. I have "met" the most awesome people hanging around AFC. We now text deals we find in stores as we shop to each other. We also wear a Goonie Bling in support of an AFC friend as she undergoes cancer treatment. We share our personal happiness, along with our happy shopping trips and send each other coupons as ROAK, asking nothing in return. 3. How has AFC changed your shopping habits? I had been using coupons for many years before joining AFC. AFC showed me that there is a whole world of couponers like myself. I am certainly finding out about more deals and stategies to roll Cats, ECBs and UPs. I thought I was good at saving before. Now, I continue to learn how to save even more, as well as to consistently save with every shopping trip. 4. What is you favorite store to shop? What stores are the most coupon friendly? What stores have the best sales/prices? My favorite place to shop is the Jackson, NJ Shoprite. Customer Service goes above and beyond to be fair, do the right thing. Sure, they have couponing rules. I agree with them all, because the rules are in place to ensure everyone has the chance to get in on a sale. Following the rules and couponing policies of stores is just part of the game we play. Would it really be as much fun if we were all permitted to run-a-muck? I dont think so. 5. What is your favorite thing to stockpile and why? Toothbrushes. Along with shopping for my family of 6, I also shop for a battered woman's shelter. I grab every free toothbrush I can get my hands on. Deodorant is also high on my list. Having 12 to 20 women and their children in the shelter, you can imagine how many toothbrushes and deodorants they can go through! Those are 2 items that just aren't shared. 6. How do you get coupons and how do you keep them organized? I receive 12-20 sets of inserts weekly from a clipping service. The shelter also receives 12 free Sunday papers a week. Each week, one coupon from each insert type is clipped. I mark the date on each one with a sharpie. Those coupons are filed into a strong box into categories. The whole uncut inserts for each week are filed by date into a filing cabinet. I write the insert date and a toss date (the furthest away expiration date) on the folder. When I need to know if there is a coupon for any item, I can simply look in the strong box, pull it, and go to the filing cabinet and pull that folder with the date that's written on the coupon. Then clip them all out and go shopping. 7. What advice do you have for a new couponer? Relax. We don't have to chase every deal. They all come around again. You won't learn everything in a day, week, or month. The veteren couponers have lots to teach. However, don't dismiss things another newbie has to say, ask, or offer. As you become more knowledgeable with couponing, please pass the knowledge on to newbies with patience. Practice ethical couponing. Read the coupons. Redeem them as intended. Cheating hurts us all. Have fun with it and you will be more likely to stick with it. 8. What advice do you have someone new to AFC? Check in at least a few times a week to your stores' sections. AFC is packed full of wonderful members posting new sales and deals they find everyday. Fill out the questionaire in the Welcome Mat. This helps the Welcome Wagon guide you directly to areas of AFC which pertain to where you personally shop. Join in the fun of some of the many interesting threads AFC offers. There is a book club thread, Frugal living "Budgeteers" Threads, coupon trains to join, and more. Play a game or enter an AFC contest. Its fun!
